Neuromuscular System
Factors Effecting the Strength of Muscle Contractions
All or None Law
There's a threshold for an impulse to reach before muscles contract
If impulse is equal to or greater than threshold, all of the muscle fibres will contract
Recruitment - the more motor units in a muscle, the harder the contraction
Frequency - the more often the stimuli, the greater the force of contraction
Wave summation = building up stimuli to get a greater force
Spatial summation = fibres contracting at different times to maintain force
The muscle fibre type
Type I - Slow Twitch Fibres
Type IIa - Fast Twitch Fibres
Type IIb - Fast Twitch Fibres
Muscle Fibres
Type I - Slow Twitch Fibres
Marathon runners
contract slowly
slow to fatigue
Aerobic
small in size
high myoglobin
high haemoglobin
high mitochondria
high triglycerides
low glycogen
low power
Type IIa and IIb - Fast Twitch Fibres
power athletes
large in size
white in colour
low myoglobin
low haemoglobin
low mitochondria
low capillary density
high glycogen
high power
