      - they are joined end to end to form sieve plates
      - holes in sieve plates allow solutes to pass through
      - sieve elements have very few organelles, a thin layer of cytoplasm and no nucleus
      - the cytoplasm of adjacent cells is connected through the wholes of sieve plates
    - - the lack of nucleus and other organelles in sieve tube elements means they cant survive so every sieve tube element has a companion cell attached
      - companion cells carry out the living functions for both themselves and the sieve cells e.g. they provide energy for the active transport of solutes
