CONVULSIVE CONDITIONS ( PARTIAL SEIZURES )
Definition
arise from the focal cortical lesion mostly commonly in the temporal lobe
diagnostic tests
Brain scans
Electroencephalography (EEG)
Pathophysiology
Ordinarily, electrical impulses are transmitted by action potential that involves a net positive inward ion influx causing depolarization in the neurons.
caused by episodic, excessive, and disorderly neuronal activity in the brain.
causes and risk factors
Traumatic brain injury
Brain irritation from surgery
Stroke or tumor
Diabetes might cause simple partial seizure known as Epilepsia Partialis Continua
assessment findings and symptoms
Somatosensory symptoms
Involves sensory strip, temporal(hearing and smell) or occipital(visual) lobe
Autonomic symptoms
• Involves temporal lobe (tachycardia, pallor, flushing, sweating)
Motor symptoms
abnormal movement of an extremity
Todd’s paralysis- post ictal transient hemibody weakness
Jacksonian march- spread to involve contiguous regions
Psychic symptoms
• Involve frontal or temporal lobe (limbic system)
disturbances, cognitive deficits, hallucinations
Management
Medical management
Carbamazepine
Clobazam
Phenytoin drug used for all types of seizures
Surgical management
Removing area involved surgically (temporal lobectomy,
Vagus nerve stimulator
Nursing management
Monitor and document AED drug levels,
Reorient patient following seizure activity
Guide him/her away from any danger
Stay with him/her until fully recovered
Nursing care plan
Possible disability
Patient regains as much fuction, physical and mental as possible
Reffer to other proffesionals
Encourage movements necessary for activities of daily living
prevent complications of immobility
Fear annd anxiety
Reassure patient and family
Maintain dignity and privacy of the patient
Talk with the patient and explain every procedure to be perfomed
Health education
Not permited to work on heights
Promote Stress management
Balance life style and moderate exercise
