Anti Hepatitis B
Trade Name: Hepsera Generic Name:Adefovir
Indications
Adefovir is used to treat chronic (long-term) hepatitis B infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus) in adults and children 12 years of age and older.
Mechanism Of Action
adefovir is as a Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor. ... Adefovir is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor analog of adenosine with activity against hepatitis B virus (HBV), herpes virus, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV
Nursing Consideration
Storage
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture

Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors
Trade Name: Sustiva Generic Name:Efavirenz
Mechanism Of Action
Anti-HIV effects. Efavirenz falls in the NNRTI class of antiretrovirals. Both nucleoside and non-nucleoside RTIs inhibit the same target, the reverse transcriptase enzyme, an essential viral enzyme which transcribes viral RNA into DNA.
Indications
Efavirenz in combination with other antiretroviral agents is indicated for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in adults and in pediatric patients at least 3 months old and weighing at least 3.5 kg.
Nursing Considerations
Side Effects
Vomitting
Dizziness
Nausea
Contra Indications
Erythema multiforme
Steven-Johnson syndrome
Toxic skin eruptions
Route Of Administration
Oral
Storage
Efavirenz should be stored at room temperature, 15 C to 30 C
Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors
Trade Name:Viramune Generic Name:Nevirapine
Indications
This drug is used with other HIV medications to help control HIV infection. It helps to decrease the amount of HIV in your body so your immune system can work better. This lowers your chance of getting HIV complications (such as new infections, cancer) and improves your quality of life
Mechanism of Action
Nevirapine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) of HIV-1. Nevirapine binds directly to reverse transcriptase (RT) and blocks the RNA-dependent and DNA-dependent DNA polymerase activities by causing a disruption of the enzyme's catalytic site.
Nursing Considerations
Contra Indications
Severe, life threatening, and in some cases fatal hepatotoxicity, including fulminant and cholestatic hepatitis, hepatic necrosis and hepatic failure
severe, life threatening skin reactions
Storage
Store nevirapine at room temperature,
Route Of Administration
Oral
Side Effects
Nausea
Vomitting
Diarrheoa
Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors
Trade Name: Epivir Generic Name: Lamivudine
Indications
Lamivudine (Epivir) is used along with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in adults and children 3 months of age and older. Lamivudine (Epivir-HBV) is used to treat hepatitis B infection
Mechanism Of Action
Lamivudine is an analogue of cytidine. It can inhibit both types (1 and 2) of HIV reverse transcriptase and also the reverse transcriptase of hepatitis B virus. It is phosphorylated to active metabolites that compete for incorporation into viral DNA.
Nursing Considerations
Side Effects
diarrhea
headache
difficulty falling sleeping or staying asleep
depression
stuffy nose
Storage
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture
Route Of Administration
Oral
Contra Indications
Breastfeeding
Hepatitis B and HIV coinfection
Peripheral neuropathy
