Culture in Wiemar Germany
General attitude
Whilst tradition still played a large role, Germny was beginning to move into the modern day
Wiemar Germany was liberal society who accepted all sorts of religions, attitudes and desire in culture
Censorship laws banned
New Functionalism
The Rose coloured spectacles were taken off
This new found culture was loved by the young but hated by the old
Art
Presented the good next to the bad
A key example of this was Otto Dix' Metropolis which shows trhe high of life such as cabaret, jazz etc, next to the unfortunate realities of Prostitutism, beggars and homelessness
New functionalism
Architecture
They used these materials to create geometric designs in colourful shapes
An example of this was the Bauhaus school which was built in Weimar in 1919
Architects made use of the new materials such as steel, plastic etc
This was deeply resented by the conservative elites and Nazis who felt this work was degenerate
The Bauhaus school was hated so much by the Nazis that they destroyed it when they came to power
Literature
Without a doubt, the older more traditional works were still really adored because this type of work is what won the Nobel Prize for literatture at the time
Nobel Prize was won by Thomas Mann who was a traditional author
Literature was a mix of the old and new in Weimar Germany
However, the banned censorship laws meant that new functionalism spread to literature also
People began to write about the realities of life - hence showing the good and the bad parts - for example "Berlin Alexanderplatz" which detailed the life of a worker in Germany
If a source comes up, then this helps validity because the new functionalism expressed life how it actually was, hence giving an accurate representation of life at the time - useful for examining whether it was actually a Golden Age
Theatre
Like the name suggest, it presented current attitudes
Very left wing
Zeittheatre was the theatre movement of the Weimar age - it treanslates to theatre of the time
Showed controversial behaviour of people in their everyday lives which was opposed by some as they believed it encouraged bad behaviour
Key playrights at the time were: Bertolt Brecht and Piscator
Mass Culture
Jazz music
Influenece from the USA
Emergence of mass culture like everywhere else in teh world
Film
Germany had the most cinemas out of all European countries
Metroplois 1926 - was a sci fi film
German film industry was the most advanced film industry in Europe
King Frederich the Great - an example of the old, more traditional films, patriotism
Blue angel - touched on sexual issues that German #media never had before - Weimar germany was liberal and moving forward but the more traditional and older generation thought this was degenerate
Charlie Chaplin was popular
However the films shown in Germany were not exclusively Geramn and had an increasing impact from the USA, shown by the popularity of Charlie Chaplin in Germany, despite it being American
Radio
1924, a radio network with 9 different stations across the country were set up so that broadcasting could reach the entire nation
by 1932, 1 in 4 Germans owned a radio despite the depression brought about by the 1932, Wall Street Crash
German radiocompany was founded in 1923
Cabaret
Cabaret attacked the old traditions of Germany in a light hearted way
Jazz music was intertwined with Cabaret
It explored things that had never been explored before and were new, not only for Germany for the world , such as: homosexuality and transvestites
Dancers were in varying degree of nudity
