ANTIVIRAL DRUGS
Herpes and Cytomegaloviruses
Trade Name: Zovirax Generic Name: Acyclovir
Indications
It is an antiviral medication. It is primarily used for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, chickenpox, and shingles. Other uses include prevention of cytomegalovirus infections following transplant and severe complications of Epstein-Barr virus
Mechanism of Action
acts as a specific inhibitor of herpesvirus DNA polymerase. It shows good in vitro activity against herpes simplex and varicella-zoster viruses.
Nursing Considerations
Side Effects
Nausea
Diarrheao
Headache
Abdominal Pain
Contra Indications
Kidney Problems
Immunocompromised
Route of Administration
Oral and Topical
Storage
Store acyclovir capsules, tablets, and suspension at(15°C to 25°C). Protect acyclovir capsules and tablets from moisture.
Store acyclovir cream at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture
Influenza A and Respiratory Viruses Drugs
Trade Name: Flumadine Generic Name :Rimantadine
Mechanism of Action
The mechanism of action of rimantadine is not fully understood. Rimantadine appears to exert its inhibitory effect early in the viral replicative cycle, possibly inhibiting the uncoating of the virus. Genetic studies suggest that a virus protein specified by the virion M2 gene plays an important role in the susceptibility of influenza A virus to inhibition by rimantadine.
Indications
Rimantadine is used to prevent or treat a certain type of flu virus (influenza A).
Side Effects
Trouble Sleeping
Nausea
Vomitting
Weakness
Dizziness
Contra Indications
Liver Disease
Kidney Disease
Seizures
Storage
Store at room temperature between (15-30 degrees C) away from heat and light.
Route of Administration
Oral
Influenza A and Respiratory Viruses Drugs
Trade Name: Tamiflu Generic Name: Oseltamivir
Indications
Oseltamivir is used to treat symptoms caused by the flu virus (influenza). It helps make the symptoms (such as stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, fever/chills, aches, tiredness) less severe and shortens the recovery time by 1-2 days
Mechanism of Action
Oseltamivir inhibits the neuraminidase enzyme, which is expressed on the viral surface. The enzyme promotes release of virus from infected cells and facilitates viral movement within the respiratory tract.
Nursing Considerations
Side Effects
Nausea
Vomitting
Neuropsychiatric events
Serious skin and hypersensitivity reactions
Contra Indications
Dialysis
Storage
Store the capsules at 25ºC; excursions permitted to 15º to 30ºC
Store dry powder at 25ºC ; excursions permitted to 15º to 30ºC
Route of Administration
Oral
Herpes and Cytomegaloviruses
Trade Name: Valtrex Generic Name:Valacyclovir
Indications
Valaciclovir, also spelled valacyclovir, is an antiviral medication used to treat outbreaks of herpes simplex or herpes zoster. It is also used to prevent cytomegalovirus following a kidney transplant in high risk cases.
Mechanism of Action
Valacyclovir is converted to acyclovir, which is converted to its triphosphate form, acyclovir triphosphate (ACV-TP). ACV-TP competitively inhibits viral DNA polymerase, incorporates into and terminates the growing viral DNA chain, and inactivates of the viral DNA polymerase.
Nursing Considerations
Storage
: Store at room temperature away from light and moisture
Contra Indications
Thrombocytopenia
Hemolytic
Route of Administration
Oral
Side Effects
Agitation
Vertigo
Dizziness
Confusion
