Peak Performance Summit 2019 (Todd Herman - The One Thing High Performers…
Peak Performance Summit 2019
Day One
Daniel Pink - Motivating Top Performance
Motivators (after fair compensation)
Autonomy
Find a way to make the job/task yours, do it your way, do extra, "reframe" it, collaborate with others
Micromanagers - Ask for it, but in terms of THEIR interests
I can save you time
I can fix your problems
I can help you
Mastery
Purpose
Purpose - serving something larger then yourself
purpose - am I making a contribution? Would anyone notice if I wasn't here?
As a leader, turn a "how" conversation into a "why" conversation
Self-Reviews (I sort of do this on the Whole Life Assessment)
Persuasion
Seller/Buyer have equal access to information
What is their perspective?
Simplify the information, reframe it
Shift from Problem Solving to Problem Finding
Do they have problems they are unaware of?
Dial the power down and try to understand from THEIR perspective
On a scale of 1-10, how likely are you to do task X?
Why isn't that number lower?
Why isn't that number higher?
Shawn Achor - Staying Positive in a Stressful Workplace
When the brain is positive, every outcome rises dramatically
therefore, it serves to keep your team happy and positive
What do happy people do differently?
Happiness doesn't happen to you, it is a choice
Gratefulness
It is not a mindset shift, it is a habitual behavior
Exercise
Meditation/focus
Gratitude
Appreciation
Preparation
45 seconds - three new things to be grateful for
Awareness that stress is about to occur
Short breaks - 30 minutes or so
Practice gratitude and purpose/meaning during this time
Praise others
Engage with other people
How can I make the best of the worst-case scenario
Not "how can I be happier" but "what can I do to create more happiness" (action)
Reducing noise
Decreasing physical noise/distraction
Decrease internal noise
Consciously decide to plan for success
I will only worry as much as this has a likelihood of actually happening
Most of our transitional moments are based on how we perceive and respond to high stress situations
How to get more out of a vacation?
Vacations increase productivity, creativeness, and happiness
More likely to get promoted if you actually take vacation
Planning is key - don't just go, plan it out and have bases covered (1 month ahead)
Meet someone where you are vacationing if possible
Adam Grant - Why Helping Others Fuels Success
3 Types
Givers
Takers
Matchers
Givers populate both ends of the achievement spectrum
What to do differently
Givers need to be selective and give their time to matchers and other givers - takers will drain them and take advantage
Schedule and maintain your own times
Specialize in certain kinds of helping, don't try to generalize or you will be taken advantage of
When dealing with takers
become a matcher
give only low-cost help (5 minute favors)
Finding takers
Don't ask their bosses - most takers are kiss asses
Watch how they deal with peers/subs
How much "I" exists in their language
Those who assume all others are takers are more likely to be takers
How to give
Give what others have said you do well
Make introductions
See from their perspective and find their problems
Todd Herman - The One Thing High Performers Do Differently
Know you field of Play
Practice - don't get complacent
Fixed VS Growth mindset
Ow VS now mindset
How to change mindset
Feedback loops
Small goals/milestones
Action and reflection
Too much time in action leads to poor planning and being reflexive
Too much reflection leads to inaction
What worked/didn't work? How have I grown?
Mental toughness: ability to be resilient in the face of adversity
Plan for negatives and create contingencies in advance
Have mentors and support, especially those that can be unemotional
Track changes, take the ego out and really look at situations
Be realistic and mindful
Taking care of yourself
Meditation
Exercise
Get the numbers, use metrics
Manage time well - use calendar well
Imposter Syndrome
Honor achievements and effort
See yourself honestly, don't exaggerate weaknesses or strengths
Coaches and mentors
Send letters of appreciation to authors, course creators, etc. Build relationships.
Acting on advice is a way of giving back
