Fluvial systems
Braided Channels
-
Contain networks of actively shifting and converging stream channels separated by narrow sand and gravel bars or islands
These occur in:
- Regions of intense erosion (often well above the graded stream profile elevation)
- Regions where sediment is very easily eroded
- glacial outwash, which is sediment rich
-
-
-
Common features:
- longitudinal bars
- Transverse bars
-
Meandering channels
-
-
-
-
-
-
Common features
- point bars and cut banks
- oxbow lakes (changes in flood plain sedimentology and/or large flood event can cause stream to bypass meander resulting in meander cutoff)
- flood plains
- crevasse splays
- swamps
Overbank deposits are primarily fine sand, silt and clay. They provide fresh plant nutrients to valley soils
-
-
Base level
- Limiting level below which a stream cannot erode the land
- Potential energy of a stream decreases downslope as gradient decreases
