Reproductive System Destiny Espitia Per.5
Major functions of reprod. system
Reproduction: process by which new individuals (offspring) of a species are produced
Male reprod. System Function: produce and disseminate a large quantity of male gamete// Goal: produce sperm & deliever it to the egg
Female Function: produce of female gamete & prep for support of developing embryo during pregnanacy
Anatomy of all major male and female reprod. structures
Male: primary Sex organ: Testes// Sperm: male gamete
MALE: Epididymis, ductus deferens, urethra= secondary accessory
Covering of testes: Tunica albuginea, septa
Anatomy of Sperm: Head, acrosome, midpiece, flagella
Female: Ovaries- primary sex organ// ductus system: delivery of female gamete
Female: secondary accessory: uterine tube, uterus, vagina
Formation of gametes
Gametes: all body cells except for gametes (sperm and eggs) are diploid
Gametes are diploid (1 copy of each chromosome)
Gonads: primary se organ// produce gametes n secrete hormones
Hormones of Reprod. System// regulation
Male: leutinizing hormone: Stimulates seminiferous tubules to secrete testosterone
Follicle Hormone: Sperm prod & maturation // Both LH & FSH- released by anterior pituitary gland in brain
Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone: hypothalamus release LH & FSH // Controlled by neg. feedback, triggered by low levels of testostreone
Testostreone: Stimulates reprod. organ develop & sex drive
Inhibin: released by testes when high levels of testosterone are present tos top production of LH & FSH *
Events of female hormonal cycles
GnRh// FSH//LH// inhibin// estrogen
Progesterone: suppression of hypothalamus from releasing GnRH
1) Ovarian Cycle, 2) Uterine Cycle, 3) Ovarian Cycle
Ovarian Cycle: Follcular phase, ovulation, luteal ohase, inabsence of preg. Preg occurs
Uterine Cycle: Menstruation, Proliferative phase, secretary phase
Disorders of Reprod. System
STDS: sexually transmitted diseases
STIS: sexually transmitted infection
Symptoms: Vary, some may not have symptoms
Types Of STDS: Parastic (scabies), Bacterial (Chiamydia, gonorrnea, yeast infection) , Viral (genital wards, HIV, Genital Herpes)
