Federalist Party
- Wanted a stronger national government
- They supported a tax to support the army, alien and sedition acts, suppression of whiskey rebellion, and jay's treaty
Democratic Republicans
- They opposed the federalists and were led by Jefferson and Madison
- They questioned the legitimacy of the national bank and promoted a strict interpretation of the constitution
Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions
- Jefferson and Madison drafted it to counteract the alien and sedition acts
- Ended up denouncing the A&S acts as infractions of constitutional rights
- Was being used for causes unforeseen by the writers

- He envisioned an active federal government and wanted them to pay war debts
Jay's Treaty
- A foreign policy crisis between Britain and the US threatened war
- They wanted reparations for loss of american shippers and a new commercial treaty to legalize american trade with British West Indies
