Barbary Pirates
several renegade countries on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa who demanded tribute in exchange for refraining from attacking ships
Jefferson stopped paying the tribute, and the U.S. fought the Barbary (Tripolitan) Wars (1801-1805) against the countries of Tripoli and Algeria.
The war was inconclusive and the U.S. went back to paying the tribute.
Louisiana Purchase
U.S. acquisition of the Louisiana territory from France in 1803 for $15 million. The purchase secured American control of the Mississippi river and doubled the size of the nation.
