John Adams (1797-1801)
XYZ Affair/Alien and Sedition Acts/ VA and KY Resolutions: After Jay's treaty the French sent 3 spies and demanded money which lead to naval battles. The Alien and Sedition Acts gave the president power in peacetime to evict any alien. The VA/KY Resolution went into effect by Jefferson and Madison, secretly made to take back rights from Alien and sedition acts.
Midnight Appointments: Congress reduced supreme justices and increased federal judges, Adams appointed Marshall within the last hours of his presidency.
Federalist vs. Jeffersonian-Republicans: Federalist wanted a strong central government and state rights and strict interpretation of constitution whereas Republicans wanted the opposite.
John Marshall: Served on the supreme court for 34 years and made federalist decisions. Appointed by John Adams during last hours of his presidency.

Era of Good Feelings: Marked by nationalism, optimism, and goodwill. Federalists faded and Democratic-Republicans adopted some of their policies and dominated. Debates over tariffs, tensions over slavery, and Democratic-Republican party would soon split
Monroe Doctrine: US would no longer be subjects for future colonization by any European powers, and kept Europe out of the Western Hemisphere. Applauded but soon forgotten and concerned with domestic issues
