General Internet Terms
Hypertext tranfer protocol(http): A set of rules when transfering data across the internet. Https(s stands for secure) and it is slower.
Web Browsers and URLs: Web Browser allows to display web page.
Common features: store fav pages, keep a history of websites visited
ftp( file transport protocol); network used when transfering files from computer to computer
They use URLs to use websites, to retrieve files,etc.
IPS(Internet service provider):Company that provides users with access to the Internet ( for usualy a monthly fee)

Browse the world wide web by using a web browser
Cloud storage
Data is stored on more than one offsite server (data redundancy)
Three common systems:
Public cloud: The customer and cloud storage provider are different companies
Private cloud: Storage provided by a dedicated environment behind a firewall; customer and cloud storage provider are integrated and operate as a single entity
Hybrid Cloud: Some data resides in the private cloud while less-sensitive data can be accessed from a public cloud storage provider
Advantages
Files can be accessed at any time, from any device and from anywhere as long as there is a stable internet connection
There is no need to carry external storage
Cloud allows recovery if customers' data and almost unlimited storage capacity
Disadvantages
Security aspects like hacking
Need stable internet connection
Costs may be high
There is a chance of loosing all backup data

Intranets
It is a computer network based on technology but designed to meet the internal needs for sharing information within a single organisation or company. It is not available to the general public and it resides behind a firewall
Differences between the internet and an intranet
An intranet is behind a firewall; internet access is open on an international scale
An intranet requires password and user ID and can only be accessed from certain agreed point; the internet can be public access from anywhere
An intranet is used to give local information and the internet covers topics of general interest
The term intranet comes from internal restricted access network
The term internet comes from international network
Reasons for adopting intranets:
It is possible to create extranets that allow intranets to be extended outside the organisation
They offer better bandwidth than the Internet
Can restrict information
It is possible to prevent external links
They are safer than the Internet since there is less chance of viruses or external hacking
It is only accessible to:
People given various levels of acces
Members of the company
Blogs, wikis and social networking sites
Blog: Personal internet journals. Are usually public and one one author. (Microblogs are similar but are used in social networking sites)
Wikis: Pages that allow users to edit and create web pages.( Anyone can edit and many authors involved
Social networking sites:Builds online communities. ( each member has its space, possible to write on each others walls
Searching the Internet for information:
opening a Website from URL . (type name of webpage in browser
Use search engine if you dont know precise name of web site.This results in 2000 hits and you may choose one of those.
Advantages: Get up to date info; get limitless info
Disadvantages: not regulated, Risk of accesing inappropiate websites
Why are they searches for relevant info is sometimes slow? Because the search is broad and has overload of results, or sometimes some browsers have preference for some webpages
It can be hard to find reliable info because anyone can set up a website and write whatever they like.
You can evaluate the reliabilty by : checking testimonials, know that commercial websies are sometimes biased and compare information from various places
