Political
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This act allowed people in Kansas and Nebraska to vote whether slavery would be allowed when they became a state. The Act was meant to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30´.
It allowed people to take their own stand in Nebraska and Kansas to vote for slavery or free-soil. This was a huge turning point for the voters and the government because laws were changing.
Political parties divided due to their different stands on whether or not they slavery should be outlawed
Compromise of 1850
Compromise of 1850 would fall under the political category because it was a change in the government. This agreement was designed to ease tensions caused by the expansion of slavery into western territories.
The Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished. In addition to that California entered the Union as a free state and a territorial government was created in Utah.
This agreement changed the policies of slavery by abolishing slavery in Washington D.C. and making California a free state.
Dred Scott Decsion
A Missouri slave sued for their freedom, claiming that their four year stay in the northern portion of the Louisiana Territory made free land by the Missouri Compromise had made him a free man. The U.S, Supreme Court decided he couldn't sue in federal court because he was property, not a citizen.

Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln was the Republican candidate and won because the Democratic party was split over slavery. This caused the South's and North's to be very different creating more tension and anger.
South fears Lincoln would abolish slavery
Intense campaign. For instance, Douglass campaigned that he would strangle the first secessionist himself.
the South no longer felt like it has a voice in politics and a number of states seceded from the Union.
John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
Abolitionist John Brown leads a small group on a raid against a federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. He did this as an attempt to start an armed slave revolt and destroy slavery itself
John Brown and his followers tried to overtake a federal arsenal in hopes of starting a slave revolt.
Gathered army of escaped slaves, blacks, and anti-slavery believers to fight for a change in law from the government.

Publication of Uncle Tom´s Cabin
A novel published by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852 that revealed the harsh truth about slavery. The novel portrayed slavery as brutal and immoral changing and educated people's perspective.
Publication of Uncle Tom´s Cabin would fall under the social category because it turned many more people against slavery.
The novel portrayed slavery very cruelly which lead to England understanding slaves better and getting a more educated view on how they were mistreated.
Nat Turner´s Rebellion
Rebellion in which Nat Turner led a group of slaves through virginia in an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow and kill planter families
Nat Turner´s Rebellion would be put into the social category because this rebellion was based on the slaves strong beliefs that slavery was cruel and brutal.
Although this rebellion was unsuccessful it showed whites that many slaves were willing to die for freedom and slavery must be abolished.
Compromise of 1820/Missouri Compromise
Missouri comes into the Union as a Slave State while Maine comes into the Union as a Free State at the line is drawn across 36'30. Jefferson was scared of the line because he thought it would be the end of the nation.
South feared the Federal Government would ban slavery
North fears the expansion of slavery because it was a threat to political power.

Secession of Southern States
Many imports were in Southern states so trade between the United States and other states came to an end.
Other countries were scared to send vessels to the United states because it was no longer under the same rule that the United States was.

Slavery
Slavery developed in the New World because the crops grown in the new colonies were labor intensive and people needed others to do it. The African king later agreed to slavery and ever since slaves have been treated like animals, starved, abused, and many more cruel acts of misbehavior.
Abolishing slavery would ruin the southern economy because they rely on slaves to sell cotton. This would also result in the more tension.
Slaves had very little reading and writing skills and also very little knowledge of the outside world. This made it so if all of the slaves were empancipated.
