Rib fractures haemothorax

Defination

is the result of laceration of an intercostal artery rather than bleeding from the lungs that lacerates the lung parenchyma

signs and symptoms

absent breath sounds

difficulty in breathing

dull sounds

chest pains

rapid heart rate

blue tinge to the lips

pale, cool, clammy skin

pathophysiology

PIC scores chartered on board and in electronic medical record

minimise intravenous fluid as possible

mobilise at least three times daily unless contraindicated

hourly incetive spirometry and coughing and deep breathing

elevate head of bed to 30 degrees

management

multimodal systemic analgesia ordered upon admission

consultation of anaesthesia acute pain service if persistant

through thoughtful assessments of geriatric patients who may be likely to tolerate multimodal systemic analgesia

don't rub anything tightly around ribs put ice on the area to relief pains

nursing care plan

treat for pain

immobilisation of the injured part

ensure rest put ice, compression and elevation on the site of injury

realignment of parts that are out of place

treatment of serious complications

elevate the limb, above the level of the heart if possible to limit swelling
