Due to the fact that there are so many volcanoes on the island, Japan was very fertile and good for farming

Japan is an island, so it is surround by the ocean, and it also has many mountains, making hard for some of the groups to attack each other

Earthquakes/Tsunamis
Japan is in a really tricky area. It's centered on three different continental plates that are constantly shifting. These shifts often create earthquakes. And some earthquakes happen underwater, causing tsunamis.

Because Japan is made up of mostly mountains, it's hard to farm. The farmers there have to be strategic about farming, and use terraces for farming rice.
