LEGAL PROFESSION
Training
Solicitor

They must find a two year training contract with an authorised training organisation (usually a solicitors firm).
ILEX Fellows are exempt during this, the professional skills course must be completed.

The solicitor is then fully qualified and admitted to the Roll of Solicitors usually working in partnership with other solicitors.
If they wish to represent clients in the Crown Court or above they must undertake further training to become a solicitor advocate.

Barrister
One year Bar professional training course, learning the practical skills required.
On successful completion they are called to the Bar, but cannot practice as an advocate yet.

Prospective member must become a member of Inn of Court (Grays, Lincoln, Inner, Temple, etc.)

What they do:
Barristers
Are represented by the General Council of the Bar: their regulatory body is the solicitors Regulatory Authority.

Can be self employed at work for an organisation: they must be a member of one of the four Inns of court.
Solicitors
Are represented by the Law of society: their regulatory body is the solicitors regulatory authority.
Contracts, leases, wills and conveyancing
Do mostly office based work, but can represent cases in the Magistrates court and county court: can also qualify for rights of audience in higher courts.

Regulations
Barristers
Regulated by the Bar standards board, this meaning that it sets standards of the behavior expected from the barristers and can take action when needed if the standards are not met. Once they have been called all Barristers have to follow the BSB handbook.
Solicitors
Regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority who aim to create a fair marketplace for those who seek legal services by making sure it is a good price and solicitors make it clear on what they're offering to their customers or people who are interested.

High positions only see 6.5% of BME which is an improvement from previous statistics but still demonstrates imbalance.
