Definition
Acute bronchitis is an inflammation of the breathing tubes within the lungs (bronchial tubes or bronchi) as a result of an infection (viral or bacterial) or a chemical irritant (such as smoke or gastric acid reflux).

Management

Encourage rest, avoidance of bronchial irritant, and a good diet to facilitate recovery

Caution the patient on using over-the-counter cough suppressants which may cause drying and retention of secretions
Ensure adequate fluid intake to liquefy secretions and prevent dehydration caused by fever and tachypnea
Encourage mobilization of secretion through ambulation, coughing and deep breathing
treatment

Chest physiotherapy to mobilize secretions, if indicated..
