Peterson Maps of Meaning 02 https://youtu.be/EN2lyN7rM4E
how should we conduct ourselves in the world? (towards the broader world, the society, in our social circle, over time)
-
social structures
social knowledge (how to behave) is built into a person, shaping us
-
-
-
culture and cultural beliefs protect you from death anxiety, but most importantly from death itself! (e.g. social group split over some issue (say religious conflicts), staying in the same space - so often that easily results in death, actual death!)
-
if somebody you care about did something you liked, tell them! that will encourage that behaviour!
games
-
there's games, and then there's the metagame - and the goal is not to win all games, the goal is to win the metagame = be invited to play all the games!
sure there's different games, just like there's different languages etc., but there's only one metagame - how to be liked by others so that they want to spend time with you
emotions
-
-
why have goals?
without a goal, there's no positive emotion! only with a goal you know when you're moving towards it (positive), or away from it (negative)
goals are dependent on a person's temperament (extroverted people want to have a goal where they can interact with a lot of people, neurotic people want a safe game, andso forth)
-
the whole story
man against environment (running the land into the ground because of overforestation, or spilling, etc.)
man with environment (exploration, cultivating the land, making it better)
those two stories can only exist together! it's never only one or the other, they always coexist!
just like humans can't only be good, we all have some bad in us - and only when we manage to harness the bad in us as well as the good can we succeed!
if you're harmless, you're not virtuous! BUT if you're a monster, and you don't act monstrously, then you're virtuous!
if you're too agreeable, but resentful, then you don't have a way to express that resenment, because you're too compassionate - you need to become tougher and learn how to negotiate (and for that you need to know how to say NO)
developing your inner monster a little bit makes you a better person, not a worse one!
depictions
they're not linear, they're much too compley for this! so trying to describe such a picture linearly will never have the same impact as the picture itself because of its complexity
we're unbelievably technologically powerful, but we're not very wise - that's a dangerous combination
so try to live a life that is wise, or at least not pathologically unwise!
