social identity theory
"in-group" members - more trustworthy, predictable and likely to reciprocate favours
shared social identity: increases perceived differences between 'in-groups' and 'out-groups' and brings together people of different social categories
MAIN IDEA:
individuals validate their social identity by favouring their ‘in- group’ at the expense of ‘out-groups’
leads to success of organisational diversity
Social Dilemmas of Workplace Diversity
Individual Participation
Success is dependent on level of employee input
Formation of subgroups may restrict movement of information
Subgroups may result in subgroup competition
Managerial Participation
Managers may start recruiting people they perceive as similar to their subgroup
Individuals will seek managers they view as similar to them
individuals may feel they won't fit in
May result in power battles
Organisational participation
Not long term benefits
Focus on short term costs
Candidates selected on ill informed, short sighted views
the glass ceiling
overcoming the glass ceiling
changing societal norms around womens roles in society
less stigmatisation of men who chose to stay home for family reasons
introduction of quotas on company boards
Realising that a more representative
blend of women and men in senior roles
just makes good business sense
what is the glass ceiling
25% of all senior management positions on company boards in Australia are held by women
compared to 40% in the public sector
a phenomenon that limits the advancements of women and other minority groups
