Cerebrum
Insula
Deep in the cerebrum within the lateral sulcus where general visceral sensations like hunger and thirst are processed
-
Located in the skull consisting of 2 hemispheres. Contains 4 lobes including frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital lobe.
Brain Stem
Controls the flow of messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Consists of midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata and superior and inferior colliculi
-
-
-
Medulla Oblongata
Controls certain ANS responses. Contains cardio center (heart rate), vascular center (blood pressure) and respiratory center (respirations).
-
-
Diencephalon
Relays sensory information and controls functions of the PNS. Consists of 3 parts including the thalamus, hypothalamus and epithalamus
Thalamus
The relay station for conscious sensory signals traveling to cerebral cortex. It amplifies or dampens a signal.
Hypothalamus
Contains many functions including control and regulation of body temp, hunger, thirst, sleep wake cycles, endocrine system, motivation behavior for mood and sex and autonomic nervous system
-
Frontal:
The lobe that initiates voluntary movement. Contains the prefrontal cortex which is the outer layer of the brain where things are processed
Parietal
The lobe that process sensory stimuli. On the left side only it contains the wernicke's area which recognizes and understands speech
Temporal
The lobe that contains the auditory and olfactory cortex which is the place that receives information from hearing and smell and interprets it. It recognizes objects, faces, words and emotional response
-
a part of the nervous system that consists of the brain/cerebrum and spinal cord. It controls most functions of the body by processing and interpreting information
