2.1 - The Sacramental Nature of Reality
Essential info
The 'sacramental nature of reality' means finding the grace of God in the physical world.
Each sacrament brings Catholics closer to God in different ways.
A sacrament is a religious ritual performed in the life of the Church that people into holiness. There are 7 sacraments.
What is a sacrament?
"An outward sign of an inward gift, instituted by Christ, in order to give grace to a human being"
Sacrament
Eucharist - Receiving the real presence of Christ in a physical way. It unites the Catholic community through the mass.
"The source and summit of the Christian life" (CCC 1324)
Reconciliation - Removes spiritual illness of sin. It restores relationship with God and the community. Offers mercy, forgiveness, and advice to be penitent. Sins are forgiven.
"If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven" (John 20)
Confirmation - It strengthens faith ready to become a mature, active Catholic. Candidates receive the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.
"he will teach you all things (John 14)
Anointing of the sick - Gives strength in sickness and in suffering. It prepares an individual for death. It shows God's presence and live throughout their life.
"The disciples [...] anointed with oil many that were sick" (Mark 6)
Baptism - person becomes a son/daughter of God and member of the Church, taking on a new identity in Christ. A person is freed from original sin, by sharing in the new life that comes from the Paschal Mystery. A person receives strength from God to continue Jesus' mission.
Go forth then and make disciples of all nations, baptising them (Matt 28)
Matrimony - 2 people give themselves permanently and exclusively. This is the only sacrament in which the people give the sacrament to each other. They are then open to the possibility of procreation and new life. God is present through the couples' life long love and commitment.
"They are no longer two but one"
(Matt 19)
Holy Orders - Priesthood establishes Christ's presence throughout the ages in the sacraments, above all the "sacrament of sacraments", the Eucharist (CCC 1211).
"he appointed twelve to twelve, to be with him, and to be sent out to preach" (Mark 3)
The sacramental nature of reality
This means finding the grace of God in the physical world.
God is invisible but can communicate with humans through everything he has created, e.g. bread, music
Divergent attitudes
Not all Christians recognise 7 sacraments. This means they do not believe it was instituted by Christ, but they might still perform it.
Not all Christians believe the sacraments are a communication of God's grace, but rather they are expressions of faith.
