Inspector Calls THEMES
-
Social Class
In this Theme, Priestly challenges views and behaviours in order to challenge class heirarchy
-
-
-
In the play, Birlings biggest concern about the situation with Eva is that there will be a "public scandal"
Birling also flaunted his position in society to the Inspector, to almost threaten him.
Birling is a Magistrate (someone who sits in court and dishes out justice). This is ironic as he has acted so immorally.
-
Young and Old
Older Generation
Priestley presents the older generation to have much more traditional views. They think they know best and dont like ot be challenged.
-
Priestley also questions their obsession with social class. e.g. Gerald marrying Shiela or not wanting a public scandal before knighthood
Younger Generation
Some seem ambitious, determined and motivated, like Eva Smith who "had a lot to say - far too much"
They also like to challenge the elders. This threatens Birling who tells them theyd "better keep quiet"
The younger generation are presented to learn their lesson. Showing a chance for a better future in their hands
-
Gerald, the oldest young man
-
-
-
At the end he thinks the engagement is safe with "Everythings all right now, Sheila"
