6.2 food production - nutrition and types of agriculture
nutrition and lack of nutrition
nutrition is important to prevent and fight diseases
individuals need macro and micro nutrients
there are two types of lack of nutrition
undernutrition: not having enough food
malnutrition: can afford but aren't consuming the right amount of nutrients
poverty is the root for hunger and malnutrition
poverty doesn't allow people to grow and buy necessary foods and leads to less productive lives which leads to more poverty
crop agriculture
traditional subsistence agriculture: enough energy and human labor to feed family
traditional intensive agriculture: same as above but more fertilizers and more labor to be able to commercialize the food
industrialized agriculture: this has a goal of producing as much as possible. people use irrigation systems, synthetic fertilizers and synthetic pesticides to ensure more yield
problems
uses heavy equipment
requires lots of capital
uses lots of fossil fuels and water
relies on a large number of pesticides and fertilizers
doesn't support independent farmers
cross breeding and genetic engineering: alters organisms genetic material to fit the needs of the producer
meat production
industrialized meat production: come from feedlots and factory farms so they grow bigger and faster with the help of grain soybeans and food with hormones
health risk: growth hormones and antibiotics making their way into humans
fishery: concentration of a particular aquatic species inland or in area of ocean
aquaculture: raising fish in freshwater ponds, lakes, reservoirs, and rice paddies
Industrialized fish and shellfish production
