Trading Standards
The act makes it an offence for a trader to make or apply false or misleading statements about goods or services. Under the act, It is an offence to apply a false statement about a product or to supple goods that have a false statement. Trading standards officers regularly check products to ascertain whether they meet any required legislation, and officers often attend street markets, stores and import facilities to check for counterfeit or unsafe products.
Product Recall
Trading Standards officers have the power to remove unsafe products. Supplying an unsafe product can result in a £5000 fine and/or imprisonment for up to 6 months. The company has a duty to repair or recall the product. Product recall usually occurs when the same fault is found in several of the same model or make of product.
CE
CE marking is a certification mark that indicates conformity with health, safety, and environmental protection standards for products sold within the Europe. The CE marking is also found on products sold outside the EEA that are manufactured in, or designed to be sold in, the EEA
BSI
The British Standards Institute works with industry and government, as well as business across the world, to produce a set of standards to assure consumers that products are produced, safe and fit for purpose.
Lion mark
In 1991, the Toy Retailers Association (TRA) joined with the BTHA to launch the approved Lion mark retailer scheme, indicating that members of the TRA only sell products confirming to EN 71
Manufacturers wishing to display CE mark on their products usually have them tested by the BSI. If the products pass BSI Test. Both CE and BSI can be displayed to reassure safety of products.
Designers and Manufacturers need to consider the safety of the potential user of their product, and should ensure that the product is safe to use.
