In 1833, a mob destroyed the Mormon printing press at Independence, Missouri
In October 1838, the Mormons attacked a unit of state militia at the battle of Crooked River. The governor expelled Mormons from Missouri due to the Danites, the Mormon militia. A mob then massacred a group of Mormons at Haun's Mill. Smith was arrested and sentenced to death, but was not executed and stayed in jail for 5 months
In 1839, Brigham Young helped relocate the Mormons to Nauvoo, Illinois
