Creates an edge-of-seat atmosphere. c.f. Beethoven Pastoral Symphony storm. Tubular bells sound like funeral and oboe obbligato. Innocent sound of sugar-plum fairy, We Three Kings, Christmassy feel, cymbal crashes and funereal tubular bell notes.

        Violins at top of range at beginning with semiquaver arpeggio patterns in strings and woodwind. Flute and oboes at top of range in descending triplets. Dotted rhythms in tuba. Chinese low-register harp. Fluttertongued flute.
      - Circus
        
        Trumpets extreme lip trill. Extreme oboe vibrato. Fairground steam organ. Marimba and temple blocks. Xylophone is a conventional instrument for clowns. Squeaky trumpets.
      - Rise and fall
        
        Sounds chaotic, threatening and confusing. Pizz. strings. Violins very high register: octave higher, glissandi, contrabass clarinet, accordion.
      - c.f. Planet Of The Apes- Electronic Bass Clarinet- high-pitched shrieks from non-verbal primates. Fluttertongue on tibetan horn. Piano riff creating feeling of chase. Marcato. High-register Tibetan horn emulates sound of hunting horn. Ram's horn also does. Low tessitura of Cor Anglais.. Side drum rolls create tension. Slow reverb buzz at bars 52-54 on electronic harp emulating chatter of apes. Violins, horns and piccolos all at top of range, creating extended sequence of high-pitched sounds. Tone-row and verticalisation of angular motifs. Complex cross-rhythms.
      - Troll-witches in Grieg "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" and high-pitched harmonics on violins in Batman. c.f. Hermann- Psycho- Murder scene.
