Respiratory & Circulatory System
Respiratory System
: The respiratory system is a series of tubes that brings oxygen into the body and gets rid of carbon dioxide
Ventilation
EXHALATION
The chest muscles relax.
The chest cavity gets smaller.
The pressure in the lungs increases.
↓ volume = ↑ pressure
This pushes air out of the lungs
INHALATION
The chest muscles contract.
The chest cavity gets bigger.
The pressure in the lungs decreases.
This allows air into the lungs
↑ volume = ↓ pressure
Circulatory System
: The circulatory system brings nutrients and oxygen to all of the body’s cells, removes waste from cells, and regulates the body’s temperature.
Blood Vessels
Heart
The human heart has four chambers:
Left and Right Atrium
Left and Right Ventricle
The right chambers receive deoxygenated blood from the body and pump it to the lungs.
The left chambers receive oxygenated blood from the lungs and pump it to the body
Blood
Blood is composed of plasma and cells.
Plasma is the liquid component of blood
Cells in the blood include:
red blood cells (RBC’s) - carry oxygen + carbon dioxide
Red blood cells are the main cells involved with gas exchange
Carry O2 from the lungs to the body’s cells (feed)
Carry CO2 from the body’s cells to the lungs (waste)
white blood cells (WBC’s) - fight infection
Platelets - clotting (make a scab)
