The Reproductive System Kennedy Abraham Per.5
anatomy of all male and female reproductive structure
Male
Primary- Testes and sperm Secondary/accessory- Epididymis, ductus or vas deferens, and urethra
Accessory organs- Seminal vesicle, prostate gland, bulbourethral gland
External genitalia- Penis and scrotum
Regions of penis- Root, shaft, glans penis, and prepuce
Female
External genitalia- Mon pubis, labia, vestibule, clitoris
Support for Ovaries- Suspensory ligaments, ovarian ligament, broad ligament
Primary- Ovaries and Ductus system Second/Accessory- Uterine tube, uterus, vagina
Region of uterus- Body, fundus, and cervix
Hormones of the reproductive system and their regulation
Male
Testosterone- stimulates reproductive organ development and sex drive
Inhibin- released by the testes when high levels of testosterone stop production of LH and FSH
Gonadotropin releasing hormone(GnRH)- release LH and FSH
Semen analysis- Test for infertility
Follicle Stimulating hormones (FSH)- Sperm production and maturation
Leutinizing hormone(LH)- stimulates seminiferous tubules to secrete testosterone
Female
Follicle stimulating hormone(FS)- development and maturation of primary follicle into secondary follicle
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)- trigger over ovulation of the most mature follicle
Gonadotropin releasing hormone(GnRH)- Stimulate anterior pituitary gland to release LH and FSH
Estrogen- primary female sex hormone released by follicle
Progesterone- Suppression of the hypothalamus from releasing GnRH
Formation of gametes
Spermatogenesis
Spermatogonium, 2. Growth (mitotic cell division), 3. Primary spermatocyte, Meiosis I, 4. Secondary spermatocyte, Meiosis II, 5. Spermatids, 6. Sperm, maturation
Sperm is produced in the testes
Oogenesis
Oogonium, growth( mitotic cell division), 2. Primary oocyte, meiosis I, 3. Secondary oocyte, Meiosis II, 4. mature ovum, second polar body
Oogenesis takes place in the ovary
Major functions of the reproduction system
Female
production of female gamete and preparation for support of developing embryo
Male-Produce sperm cells
Events of the female hormonal cycle
Reproduction Cycle- 1. Ovarian cycle- ovaries leading to the maturation and ovulation, 2. Uterine (menstruation) Cycle-Prepare the uterus for implantation of the fertilized ovum
Ovarian cycle- ovulation: day 14, Luteal Phase: day 15-28
Uterine (menstrual) cycle- Proliferative: Day 6-14, Secretory Phase: Day 15-28
Disorders of the reproductive system (STDs and STIs)
Bacterial Vaginosis- Too much bacteria in the vagina
Gonorrhea- infection in the genital, rectum, and throat
chlamydia- damages women's reproductive system
Genital warts- Small bumps on the genital area
Trichomoniasis- infection with a protozone parasite
