Dred Scott
After being sold to Dr.Emerson, he hired Dred out of many other people and Emerson kept all of the money for himself.
Emerson took Dred on a boat to go up through Illionis. Dred thought that since he was in Illinois he was a free man because Illinois is a free state.
This claim was held up in court when Emerson brought Dred to Wisconsin which is also a free state but Emerson still kept Dred as a slave, Dred really thought he could become a free man
After many hours of trials Dred was named a free man, with his wife and kids
