He sued because his master took him into free states as a slave. The Court said that no blacks were citizens.

Chief Justice Roger Taney said that slaves where property and said that they could be drought into free states.
He eventually won the case known as Dred Scott vs.Stanford. His family was free and he died 1 year later.
