140 applied. 70 were selected.
29 men. 41 women. 20-81 years.
Range of educational background and ethniticies
Randomly assigned to either base condition or Modelled refusual condition
2 phase screening process. Eliminates anyone who took more than 2 psychology classes experienced child abuse, domestic abuse or been in combat. Had to take anxiety and depression test then interviewed by licensed clinical psychologist.
Procedure
Participant and confederate introduced to experimenter. White, 30's.
Told they could withdraw at any time and keep money.
went up to only 150v
The experiment was ended when the participant refused to continue after prompts, or reached 150v.
Results
Model Refusal Condition
68.4% women started to read next question after 150v
45.5% men stopped at 150v or earlier
31.6% women stopped at 150v or earlier
54.5% men started to read next question after 150v
63.3% started to read next question after 150v
36.7% stopped at 150v or earlier
Base condition
30% stopped at 150v or earlier
70% began to read next question after 150v.
27.3% of women stopped at 150v or earlier
72.7% of women started to read next question after 150v
33.3% of men stopped at 150v or earlier.
66.7% of men started to read next question after 150v.
Model Refusal Condition
Draw was rigged this way.
Confederate teacher hesitated at 75v.
Two confederates, one a learner, one a teacher with the participant.
Confederate teacher 'I don't know about this' 90v. Then refused. Experimenter focussed on participant now instead.
Conclusion
Seeing refusal, impacted obedience levels negatively
People still obey on a similar level as with Milgram
No significant difference between genders
Personality, especially differences in need for control, impacted obedience.
