Classification of Movement Skills
Type of Movement
Serial Skills
Serial skills are a series of movements that are combined to create a more complicated skill action (e.g. a gymnastic routine)
Continuous Skills
Continuous skills have no distinct beginning or end (e.g. swimming)
Discrete Skills
Discrete skills involve movements of brief duration and have a distinct beginning and end (e.g. kicking a ball)
Fundamental Motor Skills
The foundation skills that provide the basis for the development of sport specific skills
They can be classified as:
Stability skills for balance and control of the body
Locomotor skills that enable you to move through space such as walking and running
Manipulative skills that enable you to control an object such as throwing, catching, striking and kicking
Motor skills can be classified to help determine skills can be learnt. They also provide coaches with information on how to teach that skill
Classification is based on: Movement precision; type of movement; predictability of environment
Movement precision:
Fine Motor Skills
Fine motor skills involve the cooperative use of small muscle groups. (e.g. fingers when spin bowling)
Gross Motor Skills
Gross motor skills involve a combination of large muscle actions that result in a coordinated movement (e.g. slam dunk)
Predictability of Environment
Motor skills can be classified based on the stability of the following factor: Whether the skill is self or externally paced; whether the skill is performed in a changing environment (weather, opposition, surface); whether the skill has inter-trial variability
Open Skill
Changing environment, externally paced, adaptation of skill required (e.g. Surfing: it is externally paced as the wave determines the surfer's performance, the environment is extremely unpredictable due to the size of wave and weather, there is a high inter-trial variability as the waves for each heat are different)
Closed Skill
Constant environment, replication of skill (e.g. Free throw in basketball: It is self paced as the shooter decides when to take the shot, there are no external environmental factor factors influencing the shot such as the weather or defenders there is no inter-trial variability as the conditions are the same each time)
