Full Blood Count (FBC)
RBCs
-
-
Hb = Hemoglobin
low = anemia
Look at MCV:
- anemia type depends on mean volume of RBC's
--> microcyctic
--> normocytic
--> macrocytic
-
RBC
note that RBC, Hb, and Hct usually go up and down together
-
-
WCC
WCC = White Cell Count
-
low WCC = leukocytopenia
not producing enough WCC
bone marrow failure
- drugs
- infiltration of bone marrow
- fibrosis
WCC are being destroyed
Viral Infections
- HIV* --> very common cause
WCC Differential
-
-
-
Neutrophils
-
low = neutropenia
-
-
Splenomegaly*
- note that both neutrophils and monocytes are stored in the spleen and released on mass when needed
