primary surgery
this can be performed for cure or control of cancer, for instance lumpectomy and, mastectomy, pneumonectomy including radical neck dissection.
supportive sugery
this can be done while the patient is undergoing a course of treatment. this includes gastroctomy for insertion of feeding tube in cases of cancer of the mouth, oesophagus and stomach, colostomy for colorectal cancer, and suprapubic cystostomy for the insertion of a urinary catheter with prostate cancer.
palliative surgery
can be done at an advanced stage of cancer when there is no prospect of a cure, but with the intention to improve the quality of life. for example, cordoctomy or rhizotomy for the control of intractable pain in advanced cancer.

prophylactic surgery
is the removal of non-vital tissue or organ in people who are at risk of developing cancer due to a genetic predisposition. this can be done whether the patienr has symptoms of cancer or not.
an example is a hysterectomy in a woman who has reaches menopause or is not intending to have children.

diagnostic surgery
a piece of tissue from a suspected tumour or the whole tumour is excised and analysed for the presence of malignancy. a biopsy may involve a small procedure with local anaesthesia or major surgery with general anaesthesia. laboratory analysis of tissue further allows for staging of cancer to determine the advancement of cancer.
