Abnormal head
growth
Plagiocephaly
Pathophysiology
Asymmetrical head die to imbalance in growth rates at sutures (coronal, lamdoid, saggital) due to positional moulding
All sutures are open
Clinical
presentation
Posterior flattening, frontal protuberance, and ear displacement anteriorly due to positional moulding
-
Craniosynostosis
Pathophysiology
Skull bone sutures fuse prematurely (before late childhood)
Leads to distortion of head shape, usually localised
Commonly affects saggital suture
May be part of a syndrome
Clinical presentation
Saggital: long, narrow skull
Lamdoid: asymmetric skull with posterior flattening, frontal protuberance, posterior displaced ear :

Normal growth
Pattern
Most occurs by 2y, 80% by 5y
Physiology
Brain growth with open fontanelles/sutures
Posterior fontanelle closes 8wk, anterior by 18m
Familial influence

Macrocephaly
Aetiology
Congenital/genetic
