Separation Techniques
Chromatography.
Aim
To separate small amounts of substances, especially pigments, from mixtures.
We can use chromatography to identify contents of a mixture, and test the purity of a substance.
What is it?
Chromatography is the method of separating two or more components that dissolve in the same solvent. Different substances have different solubilities.

4: The solvent then travels up the paper, carrying the dyes along.
The more soluble the component is in the solvent, the further it travels.
Identical dyes travel the same distance up the paper.

Filtration.
Aim
Filtration is a technique used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid. e.g Sand and sea water.
What is it?
Filtration works on suspension, containing insoluble solids that are larger (in size) than the liquid particles.
