what is communication?
communication
: the ongoing symbolic process by which humans create, maintain, transform, repair reality through social interaction
communication happens everyday, whether it is unconsciously or consciously, whether it is said or not said
we can communicate one on one (dyad) or to a bunch of people at one (public speaking)
the communication process
all communication begins with the sender and end with the receiver
the sender is generally responsible for the conveyance of message, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they have absolute control of the process
the sender's personality, beliefs, culture and education all influences the message being conveyed
sender must choose proper channel to convey message and wrong channel can cause miscommunication
communication process take quite some time to explain but takes a split second to occur
communication studies and you
communication is essential to our well-being and livelihood because we use communication and interaction in our lives to fulfill our physical, social, practical and identity needs
the skills that are developed by communication majors are highly valued by all kinds of employers because they generally know the means on how to be successful in a workplace setting
models of communication
the sender
: the individual group who is initiating the message. can also be referred as the communicator
the receiver
: the individual or group to who the message is sent
the message
: the particular content that is sent and received. message can be verbal or non-verbal, can be ongoing or one-off, can be conscious or unconscious
the channel
: the means by which the message is sent. can be spoken/phone/radio/tv/etc
noise
: anything that gets in the way of message transmission
the context
: physical, social, political, historical structures in which communication occurs
feedback
: the response by the receiver
