Endocrine Organs
Anterior Pituitary
-
FSH
Females: stimulates growth of ovarian follicles in ovaries. Males: stimulates sperm production in testes.
LH
Females: Stimulates ovulation, estrogen, and progesterone synthesis in ovaries. Males: stimulates androgen synthesis in testes.
-
PRL
Female: stimulates milk production in mammary glands. Male: may play a role in sensitivity in testes.
GH
Stimulates increased growth and metabolism in target cells, synthesis of somatomedin in the liver to stimulate growth at plates, targets almost every cell in the body.
Posterior Pituitary
ADH
Stimulates reabsorption of water from tubular fluid in kidneys, stimulates vasoconstriction in arterioles of body, raises blood pressure, targets kidney and smooth muscle in arteriole walls
Oxytocin
Female: Stimulates smooth muscle contraction in uterine wall, stimulates milk ejection from mammary glands. Male: stimulates contraction of smooth muscle in male reproductive tract
Thyroid gland
Thyroid Horomone
increases metabolism, oxygen use, growth and energy use, supports and increases rate of development and targets most body cells
Calcitonin
reduces calcium levels in body fluids, decreases bone resorption by osteoclasts and increases calcium loss through kidneys and targets bone and kidneys
Parathyroid glands
PTH
increases calcium levels, increases calcium reabsorption by small intestine by calcitriol, decreases calcium loss through kidneys
Adrenal Cortex
Corticosteroids: Mineral, gluco, and gonado
regulate the balance of electrolytes (in kidney cells), elevate blood glucose levels(in liver cells), sex hormones (sex organs).
