Ecology
Ecology: scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment
ecosystem: collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with their nonliving environment
-
Producer vs. Consumer
producer (autotrophs): organism that first capture, then make energy
-
-
-
-
-
Energy Loss
Most energy is lost as heat (thermal energy). Organism stores 10% of the energy. step up = energy lost
Biological Magnification: the increasing concentration of toxic substances with each successive link in the food chain
Vocabulary
non-native species: a type of organism that does not belong in a place, but is introduced either accidentally or on purpose
ex) The lionfish is a non-native species in the Atlantic that have had a negative impact on the habitat and other organism.
tertiary: third of a type in a chain
ex) The tuna is the tertiary consumer in this aquatic food chain.
-
detritivore: heterotrophs that obtain nutrients by eating decomposing plant and animal parts as well as feces
ex) In food webs, detritivores generally play the role of decomposers.
trophic level:the position it occupies in a food chain
ex) The same animal can be at the tertiary and secondary level in a food web.

Ecological Relationships
-
-
predation: a predator/prey relationship between two species where one eats the other (form of population control)

Carbon Cycle
plants take in carbon dioxide from the air -> consumer then eat the plants -> consumers are eaten by other consumers
-> carbon is returned by exhaling CO2 or by fossils decomposing
Carbon is stored on Earth in the soil, air, and in living organisms.
Nitrogen Cycle
nitrogen fixed by bacteria or lighting into usable forms -> plants are eaten by consumers -> consumer then decompose and nitrogen is returned to the ground -> nitrogen is unfixed by bacteria and returns to the air or stays in the ground
The names of special plants that have bacteria in their roots that change nitrogen into “usable forms” is called legumes.
