Sorted for Stress
Intro (15 mins)
Ask participants to introduce themselves, what causes them stress and what they would like to get out of the workshop

Thank participants for their ideas but explain that many of these are short term, and may not always work. To sort out stress for the long term, we are going to take a novel approach to stress. This approach can be used alongside tactics that currently work for us.
Our approach is that we will sort our stress if we better mobilize, manage and renew our energy. The rest of the workshop will be spent exploring energy management, rather than necessarily stress management.
Focus is on prevention, rather than cure
Stretch and Recharge
Dr Loehr spent many years working with top class sports men and women. What he observed was that the real champions, kept up their energy under stressful conditions by oscillating between pushing themselves beyond their capacity and having periods of recharge
The "stretch" part of this formula help us to access the "good stress" that we need to perform at our peak.
Psychology studies show that it's not when we're relaxing on holidays or watching TV that we feel at our happiest. Our moments of greatest enjoyment are when we are facing a tough challenge, and we have and trust in the skills to deal with that challenge.
Has anyone got an example of a time like this in their lives that they'd like to share?
In terms of "recharge" - Dr Loehr observed tennis matches, to try to pick out what made the difference between the match winner and the player who came second. Interestingly, both players did pretty much the same as eachother on the court, but it was in between points that he observed a difference.
By using a set of breathing and muscular routines, the best players were able to drop their heart rates by as much as 20 bpms between points.

What might be the difference between two business teams competing for a new client at a sales pitch - ones who had regularly taken time to refresh their during the day vs. a team who had worked flat out to get the pitch done?
Show impact of graph:
- Our energy will be diminished both if we over or underuse it (see "boreout).
- 90 to 120 mins chunks
- recharge periods don't have to be long - you can feel benefits in just 60 seconds
Self Control
During this workout we are going to generate ideas as to how we can personally stretch and recharge our energy and so sort our stress.
However our best intentions and the reality of what happens when we leave the room may be two different things. Let's explore "self control" and see how it works.
-
Purpose of activity is show just how small our reserve of self control really is. And research has shown that its this same reserve that we plunder when we're trying to sit properly, resist tempting foods, stick to our exercise plans, and control and regulate our emotions and actions. Researchers have also found that unsurprisingly, this reserve can easily get used up.
Ask the group who has an example of doing very well controlling your actions and emotions - and then losing self control?
Therefore to sort our stress for the long haul, we need to need to find a way of changing our behavior without the need for self control.
We can do this by creating routines. I.e then just like brushing our teeth, we will do our new habits without even thinking about them

Spheres of Energy
You might be asking yourself, how do I get the most out of my energy to sort my stress?
Performance psychology Dr Loehr has identified 3 energies that we can harness to sort our stress for the long term
Physical fuel, Mental Clarity and Emotional Resilience
Explain that underlying and nourishing all three energies is our higher purpose. This is the bigger reason of why we do what we do. If we keep this in mind, this will give us turbo boost through the tricky times
Routines
-
The combination of our new routine, along with our current practices should mean that our 3 energies oscillate between stretch and recharge during the day. The point of the routine is the fill the gaps that currently exist.

Higher Purpose
Magic weapon to support us in sorting our stress, especially in the tough times, is to link our routine to a higher purpose we care about.
