PITUITARY GLAND DISORDERS ACROMEGALY AND GIGANTISM
ACROMEGALY
Is a hormonal disorder that develops when pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone during adulthood.
GIGANTISM
A condition of accelerated growth and increase height as a result of too much growth hormone during childhood
CAUSES
Pituitary gland tumor
hyperpituitarism (over production of growth hormone)
Assessment and Common Findings
Enlarged organs such as heart
loss of interest in sex
erectile dysfunction in man
menstrual cycle irregularities in women
pain and limited joint mobility
enlarged tongue, hands and feet and facial features
impaired vision, headache
fatigue and muscles weakness, elevated blood pressure
a deepened, husky voice due to enlarged vocal cords and sinuses
impaired glucose tolerance, resulting in diabetes mellitus
DIAGNOSTIC STUDIES
Immunoassay of hormone levels reveal amount of growth hormone
CT scan of the head and MRI may show evedence of tumor / adenoma
TREATMENT
Hypophysectomy ( to remove the tumor)[surgery]
[Radiosurgery] is the highly focused external beams of radiation shrink the tumour
[radiation therapy] combination of medical and surgical treatment
[medication] biomocriptine and cabergoline used to lower growth hormone level
pegvisomant blocks the effects of growth hormone
