3) gently warm the sulphuric acid in the beaker by using a bunsen burner for approximately 30 sec, than take it off the bunsen burner
-
5) stir the mixture and add the copper oxide until the liquid becomes blue which is the product of the chemical reaction where the soluble salt of copper sulphate is formed
6) you will know that you have added an excess when the copper oxide won't react with any acid anymore, as the acid will have been neutralised, leaving some black unreacted copper oxide
7) filter the solution to remove the excess copper oxide (insoluble) so that the the crystals are pure
8) pour the remaining solution in an evaporating dish and heat it to evaporate the water - could use bunsen burner but if the solution is heated up too much the copper oxide crystals can break down releasing gases - heat up gently using an electric heater or water bath
9) as the water gets evaporated crystals will start to form - crystallisation - filter again and dry

base & alkalines can both neutralise acids. Alkalines can be metal oxide, metal carbonate and metal hydroxide
