Can broken up into 3 themes: Perceptions of the community, perceptions of others and perceptions of self (Abdullah, 2015, p. 36)
Oftentimes white teachers do not have adequate diversity training

Results
“The researchers looked for demographic information, evidence of attitudes towards diversity, the semantics of the language used, and common themes found throughout the essays.” (Abdullah, 2015)
“Many of the reflections referred to the personal life and upbringing of the preservice teachers themselves.” (Abdullah, 2015)
Summary
Implications
“The sample that was observed consisted of all students who identified as and presented themselves as White, consisting of 218 students.” (Abdullah, 2015)
“The diversity in the class consisted of some regional diversity, but most of the students were from the Southeast United States, specifically, Alabama and Georgia, coming from mostly homogeneous primarily white middle to upper class communities according to their essays.” (Abdullah, 2015)
“The vast demographic divide between teachers and students is of growing educational and public concern” (Cherng, 2016, p. 1).
These teachers are less relateable to students because they have never been in a situation where they were the minority.
“A common explanation of why the demographic divide is so concerning is that minority students have more favorable perceptions of minority teachers (Auerbach, 2007; Quiocho & Rios, 2000; Shipp, 1999)” (Cherng, 2016, p. 1).
“More favorable student perceptions of teachers in turn can translate into better academic outcomes such as motivation, interest, and grades (Midgley, Feldlaufer, & Eccles, 1989; Teven & McCroskey, 1997; Wentzel, 2002)” (Cherng, 2016, p. 1).
Reflections written by pre-service teachers in this study showed the white teachers lack of cultural understanding and awareness.
"The MET study collected data on 2,756 teachers in 317 schools in 6 U.S. school districts during the academic years of 2009-2010 and 2010-2011." (Cherng, 2016, p. 2)
The article recommended cultural immersion projects and diversity classes be mandatory for students majoring in education.
“Although previous research has addressed teachers’ perceptions of students and explored questions of race matching, relatively little work has explicitly addressed whether students, and especially minority students, have more favorable perceptions of minority versus non-minority teachers” (Cherng, 2016, p. 2).
“This comparison is the focus of the present study. In particular, we ask whether students’ perceptions of their teachers vary by teacher race/ethnicity after controlling for other teacher characteristics” (Cherng, 2016, p. 2).
Students liked their minority teachers better and found them to be better teachers.
“These pre-service teachers tend to gravitate towards other white people in order to feel comfortable in their environment as evidenced by their choice of college and their self identified groups of friends.” (Abdullah, 2015)
“Liu, Pickett Jr. and Ivey (2007) argue that the experiences of White middle-class should be taken into account when advising these students and should be addressed because of their shared experiences and lack of exposure to diversity.” (Abdullah, 2015)
“Pre-service teachers should also be exposed to multiple diverse populations in their practice and service-learning experiences.” (Abdullah, 2015)
“White Disadvantage not only affects diverse student populations in a negative way but also keeps pre-service teachers who experience the phenomenon from becoming the best teachers that they can be.” (Abdullah, 2015)
“As used in the MET study, the instrument has four domains: emotional support, classroom organization, instructional support, and student engagement” (Cherng, 2016, p. 4).
People need to realize that there is a difference in students perceptions of white teachers.and non white teachers
“Racial identity, education level, community, service location, diversity, gender, and assumptions, were the most commonly identified themes.” (Abdullah, 2015)
The education system needs to encourage more minority students to become teachers
