“To fully understand parental engagement one must look carefully at relation¬ships as they are affected by family background, cultural capital, institutional reception, and desired outcomes, as well as the relationships between groups. The process is not unidirectional (as it is often portrayed), with family back¬ground characteristics leading to stocks of cultural capital, which align with institutional rules and result in a desirable outcome.
