Loftus and Palmer (1974) Classic study
Aim
To investigate whether leading questions influence eyewitness accounts estimating the speed of a car.
Procedure
Each of the 5 groups was shown 7 clips of a traffic accident, in different orders. The clips ranged from 5-30 seconds long.
Each group completed the same questionnaire. One question differed for each of the five groups.
How fast were the cars going when they.... into each other?
Collided
Hit
Bumped
Contacted
Smashed
Sample: 45 Students split into 5 groups.
Conclusion
The use of different words can significantly effect a witnesses answer.
If the participant was unsure of the speed, the wording will have helped them decide biasly.
Results
Hit = 38.1
Bumped = 34
Collided = 39.3
Contacted = 31.8
Smashed = 40.5
