Setting: London Dungeon – Labyrinth. This is a walking tour part of the experience in which visitors are 'treated' to a series of scary events, including a screaming skeleton 'scary person' who would step out and block people.A pre-test conducted by the researchers established that the Labyrinth induced significant increases in heart rate amongst those who experienced it, suggesting elevated levels of arousal/fear. There were 56 participants in the main experiment, all of whom had agreed to complete a series of questionnaires in exchange for a reduced ticket price. They were, however, unaware they were part of a psychological investigation. Each participant walked slowly around the Labyrinth for approximately 7 minutes and all encountered the scary person during that time. The rest of the visit was then completed, including all other exhibits in a fixed order which took around 45 minutes. At this point informed consent was obtained, the participants had the aims of the experiment explained to them and were given the right to withdraw. Those who consented completed three questionnaires:
