Acute Bronchitis
severity linked to smoking/pollutant exposure
less commonly bacterial (bordetella, chlamydophila, mycoplasma)
associated with generalised resp infection esp in winter
usually viral (rhino, corona, influenza, parainfluenza, adenovirus)
inflamed oedematous bronchial tree
cough (usually non-productive, mat last several wks)
substernal pain in severe trachea inflamm
fever
Tx
supportive if viral (control cough)
if bacterial: amoxicillin/clarithromycin/tetracycline
if severe: ventilatory support
Acute Bronchiolitis
usually RSV
or else parainfluenza, influenza, adenovirus, rhinovirus
Pertussis (whooping cough)
Acute Laryngotracheobronchitis (Croup)
infective exacerbation of COPD
Pneumonia
