Statistics/Data Analysis
Line Plot
Step 1. Make a line across the page
Step 2. put the numbers under the line
step 3. everytime that number appears, put an x above it
Histograms
step 1. make a graph
step 2. add your different numbers to the side and bottom
step 3. add your data to the chart as it appears
Range
The way to find the range is (first put the numbers from least to greatest) subtract the least number and the greatest number then you have the range
18, 19, 21, 24, 27 you subtract 27 by 18 and you get 9 for the range
Central Tendency
Mean
Example
2+3+57+7+2+21+5=90 Then 90/7=13(was rounded because it was a decimal)
How it works
Step 2: Divide the answer by how many numbers you add (ex. if I added 6 numbers together then I would divide the answer by 6)
Step 1: Add all numbers together
When to Use
When the data has no extreme value
Median
How It Works
Step 1: Order the numbers from least to greatest
Step 2: Slowly take off one from the smallest number and the biggest number.
Example
11155577722299933 To 1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,5,5,5,7,7,7,9,9,9 Then slowly take on away from both the left and right side. Median=5
When to use
Use this when finding the middle of a group of numbers
Mode
When to Use
When trying to find which number pops up the most.
How it Works
Step 1: Order the numbers least to greatest
Step 2: Whichever number shows up the most that is your mode
Example
5,5,5,5,8,8,3,2,2,9,9,9,1,1,1 To 1,1,1,2,2,3,5,5,5,5,8,8,9,9,9. The Mode is 5 because 5 shows up 4 times.
M.A.D
The way to find the made is first, find the mean, next, Find the difference between each point, finally find the mean of the answers to step 2.
59, 61, 59, 54, 68, 59 add all of these which is 360 then divide by 6, then find the difference of 60 by every number, find the mean of all the answers, which is 18 then divide by 6 and your answer (M.A.D) is 3
I.Q.R
The least number (4) in the two inner quartiles and the greatest number (12) then subtract and you get 8 for the inner quartile range
The way to find it is in the two inner quartiles then get the least number and the greatest number and subtract them to get the I.Q.R
Box Plot
Step 2- Make a number line.
Step 3- Find the median of all the numbers and place it on the number line.
Step 1- Arrange the number from least to greatest.
Step 4- Find the median of the left and right sides of the median, and place them on the number line.
Step 5- make a box with the medians, by connecting the lines.
Step 6- find the least and greatest numbers and place them on the number line as dots instead of lines.
Step 7- Connect the dots to the box with a horizontal line.
Statistical questions
What it is
A statistical question is a question that need statistics to solve.
Example
How many minutes does it take an average person to bike a mile?
