Data Analysis
Central Tendency
Mean
1,2,2,2,2,3,3,4,5,5,5, if you add these all together they equal 34, then you divide that by how many numbers there are and your answer to that is the mean so for this equation it would be 3.090
you just add all the numbers together than divide your sum by the number of numbers there are
the mean is used when the data have no extreme values
Median
The median is the number in the middle of the set of numbers. But the data must be arranged in order from least to greatest. If there is a even number of numbers, then you add the two numbers in the middle then divide by two.
1,2,2,2,2,3,3,4,5,5,5 the number in the middle is the median, so in this case it would be 2 and 1/2
when the data has no extreme values
Mode
1,2,2,2,2,3,3,4,5,5,5 since the most shown is the 2, the mode will be 2
All you have to do is find the number that shows up the most, its easy and simple
when the data have many repeated numbers
IQR
First, you order the numbers from least to greatest, then you find the median. Next, you calculate the median of both the lower and upper half of the data. Then, the IQR is the difference between the upper and lower quartile.
You would use iqr when you want to spread out the middle values.
Statistical Questions
You would use a statistical question when you want the answer to be data
an example of a statistical questions is: how many minutes does the average 12 year old exercise day
A statistical question is a question that uses statistics
M.A.D
To do the M.A.D of a group of numbers you have to first find the difference between the group of numbers and the mean. Then you have to find the mean of the difference.
I would use M.A.D when i'm trying to spread out data in a data set
1,1,1,1,1,1,1. the mean would be 1, the M.A.D of these numbers would be 0.
Line Plot
I would use a line plot when I am comparing numbers
A line plot is a graph that shows frequency of data along a number line
Histograms
A histogram shows basic information about data
A histogram is a bar graph of raw data that creates a picture of the data distribution
Box Plots
an example is a box and whisker plot
you would use a box plot when you are showing the shape of a set of data
a box plot is the standard way of shoeing a 5 number set of data
Range
you would use range when you are showing the spread of a set of data
range is the difference between the highest and lowest numbers in a set of data
